Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Events have a significant impact on the environment since it gathers people from all around the world in just a few days. When talking about environmental impact from events, previous research states that the biggest environmental impact during festivals comes from: transportation, accommodation, meals, energy, water use and waste. These issues directly connect to an event with the size as Biathlon World Championship 2019.

The purpose of this paper is to do an initial work on the standard for sustainable events, ISO 20121, around the Biathlon World Championship in 2019. This paper will provide several suggested environmental goals and investigate whether the ISO standard is an appropriate tool for an event with the size of Biathlon World Championship 2019, to use to get a structure of its sustainability work. To achieve the purpose of this paper several methods have been used, including literature research and a case study of the World Championship in Falun 2015.

The result from the case study that is presented in this paper shows how valuable and educational it is to look at what previous events have done. Before the Biathlon World Championships 2019 the most important lessons to learn from World Championship in Falun 2015 is: sustainable partnerships, information dissemination, free buses, increasing the capacity of train and bus from the surrounding area, and waste disposal.

This paper presents suggestions for focus areas for the Biathlon World Championship 2019, these include: transport (two different categories), waste, food / beverage, energy, flows of material resources, attitude / knowledge, purchasing / procurement and advertising products /merchandise as focus areas. Previous research writes that the long-distance transportations represent the biggest carbon footprint, and especially the flights. Therefore, long distance transportation made by all the participants, to and from Östersund, are one more area to be focusing on.

Several goals are presented in this paper. A particularly important area to set up goals around is food / beverage, as previous research describes is an important area for promoting green messages. Another important area to set up goals around is the organization's own transport since previous research states that it is important for an event to live as it learns and be rule model.

The conclusion of this work is that the standard for sustainability in events, ISO 20121 is a good tool for an event like the Biathlon World Championship 2019 to make us of to get structure and guidance in their work with sustainability. It is appropriate that such a major event like the Biathlon World Championship 2019 also certifies in accordance with the ISO 20121-standard.
