Abstract [en]

Securing the connection between wastewater pumps and a supervisory system is the main aim of this paper. The compairson between MQTT and OPC UA in respect to data overhead, security and how to implement them in a Beckhoff PLC is a secondary goal. Litterature research and practical measurements of data overhead. A solution with the use of private APN in the mobile network and securing the connection with IPSec tunneling was proposed. The use of OPC UA as a protocol for end to end communication was the best solution due to the ease of implementation in TwinCAT 3. MQTT and OPC UA have different abilities and should be used in different situations. The conclusion is that it is difficult to theoretically calculate the ammount of overhead when a connection is encrypted and is transported ontop of another encrypted channel.
