Abstract [en]

This study aims to find out whether the concept of sustainable development is permeated in biology textbooks for primary school. In addition, I look at how the term is defined and how explanations on economic, social and environmental perspectives are presented.

Three textbooks, that were selected from among the leading publishers of school books in Sweden and were the most recent editions, were examined with text analysis method.

The analysis showed that the textbooks are not imbued the concept of sustainable development. It also emerged that the definition of sustain-able development as well as explanations of the three perspectives were inadequate. One of the textbooks didn´t have the concept of sustainable development in its content at all.
