The content of the main daily newspaper in Sweden, Dagens Nyheter, in 1994 is compared with that of 1985. The obvious differences concern the view of archaeologyas subject to ordinances designed to preserve Sweden's cultural heritage and a less manifest emphasis on field work and the Viking Age.Dagens Ny heter seems to regard its task as concerns archaeology as educationalvis-ä-vis its readers, not as critically observing, analysing, and commenting on variousarchaeological activities. Archaeology is news and entertainment, and onlyrarely a subject for public debate. Generally, the same is true of Forskning och Framsteg, the leading populär scientific journal in Sweden. As compared with Dagens Nyheter the archaeology of this journal is more international, and more marginal in relation to the mainstreamof archaeological research in Sweden. The latter is due to the dependence of Forskning och Framsteg on its financiers.
