Sexual murder is when an individual commits a murder and the motive is of sexual art. Sexual murderers are a small group in the community, but they do exist and it is important to have knowledge about these individuals since they have a highly deviant behavior. The purpose of this paper was to describe the childhood conditions of sexual murderers and see if there are any common factors in the background of sexual homicide perpetrators. This paper is a systematic review of the existing research in this area. The databases PsycInfo and PubMed has been used and articles was selected after specific criteria's that was formulated before the search began. The results showed that many sexual homicide perpetrators were themselves victimized as children. Both physical and emotional abuse, and sexual assault, showed to be common among sexual murderers. They were also found to often have behavior problems as children and school problems such as learning difficulties, special education and suspension. The results also showed that sexual homicide perpetrators often felt socially isolated during childhood and many sexual murderers reported that they had a poor attachment to their parents. The social bond theory, formulated by Hirschi (1969), was applied on these results. Sexual homicide perpetrators had a lack of attachment to peers and to their family which the social bond theory believes to be one reason why an individual choose a criminal path. Further research in this area is needed since individuals who commit these types of offenses have a deviant behavior and forms a dangerous offender.
