Abstract [en]

To integrate agents and wireless mobile computing devices, this paper proposes a framework, spontaneous agent networking. In the paper, we give the definition of spontaneous agent networking. With this framework, customers could utilize their wireless mobile computing devices to locate agents, which they need, easily and utilize them without manual intervention. The architecture of the framework is described in detail. The key idea of the framework is that agents advertise their existence and capabilities in directory servers. To decrease communication traffic, directory servers are organized into layers. The contents and format of registered information are important because they will decide if customers could find appropriate agents exactly and easily. The design of registered information is given in the paper. The paper also points out the advantages of the framework. At the end of paper, we discuss the implementation of the framework briefly.

Abstract [en]

Today many organizations are geographically distributed, and the number of international organizations is increasing. Managing knowledge in a distributed organization may include a knowledge repository. An important aspect of a knowledge repository is the responsibility of maintaining the repository, to ensure that the repository is accessible and up-to-date for all users. Our research question is how to acquire knowledge from multiple sources in distributed organizations. We focus on notations used in knowledge acquisition from multiple sources in distributed organizations. We present two notations that support knowledge acquisition in distributed organizations and evaluate them in two field experiments. The first notation, SGN, was not filtered but visible to the domain experts, whereas the second notation, XML, was filtered but not visible to the domain experts. The knowledge represented by the unfiltered notation was used in the design and implementation of an experimental knowledge-based system executing in a distributed environment. The results indicate that the unfiltered notation selected was understandable, and was a good notation as a draft modeling language in the distributed knowledge acquisition process. The knowledge-based system was evaluated in field experiments during two winter seasons and the results indicate that actions proposed by the system were the same as actions taken by experts in about 50 % of the cases. The filtered notation was presented to the domain experts using a building as a metaphor for the knowledge repository. The virtual building was a peer-to-peer design, using an Intranet to communicate. By joining the building community, domain experts can share their knowledge and are able to communicate with other domain experts in the same room using modalities as audio and video. A difference in our approach compared with earlier work is that the domain experts were able to move inside the knowledge repository. The results indicate that acquiring knowledge, without an intermediary knowledge engineer, from multiple sources to a knowledge repository is facilitated by using the building metaphor. The results also indicate that the building metaphor increases the domain experts´ motivation to contribute to the knowledge repository on a regular basis.

Abstract [en]

Knowledge acquisition involving several experts in different time and different places is difficult to perform with old technologies. Internet, Virtual Spaces and 3-D Graphics offer new methods and technologies for the knowledge acquisition process. The knowledge is in this approach represented by an artefact in the virtual space and the incremental growth of knowledge is visualised by the artefact growing during the process. Our work differs from other approaches in that the experts may move, meet and communicate inside the artefact. Beyond the visualised artefact, hidden from the domain experts, is a notation, based on SGML, describing the artefact at some level of granularity. We implement different views of the artefact and discuss how they may contribute to knowledge acquisition.

In our approach we regard the organisational memory as an artefact in a virtual space on internet. Evolution of knowledge is visualised by refinement of the artefact in the virtual space. Beyond the visualised artefact, hidden from the domain experts, is a notation, based on SGML, describing the artefact at some level of granularity. The SGML-based notation is in our implementation visualised as a building. Our work differs from other approaches in that the experts may move, meet and communicate inside the knowledge repository. Due to constraints of equipment, network and virtual spaces software of today we propose and implement an intermediate architecture (KAVS) to study aspects of knowledge acquisition in a distributed environment.

Abstract [en]

Building intelligent software agents using traditional knowledge acquisition methods is difficult because of the dynamic properties of Internet. Knowledge about Internet can be divided in two levels. The first level is knowledge about tools and methods for searching information in Internet. The second level is knowledge about information in Internet (meta level). We focus on the meta level. Our approach is to identify knowledge sources in Internet. The knowledge may be implemented in a software agent and the planning can be improved by combining the knowledge from several intelligent software agents.

Abstract [en]

VVEXP is a prototype of a knowledge based system in winter road maintenance. VVEXP has access to a real time database that contains recordings from about six hundred field stations. One recording typically contains temperatures of air and road surface, wind speed and direction, dew point and precipitation. The recordings are presented to the local road districts. Interpretation of these recordings demands knowledge of the information system, meteorology and road maintenance. Chemical and/or mechanical utilities are used to avoid road slipperiness. If the slipperiness can be predicted the amount of chemicals used can be significantly reduced . To support decision making, a prototype of an expert system was developed. Two local road districts were assigned to the project. Field studies in the two districts and in-depth interviews with experts were accomplished in the winter of 1990/91. The knowledge of prediction of slipperiness and steps to prevent slipperiness was elicited. Systemic Grammar Network is the representation scheme used in the knowledge acquisition process to formalize the knowledge.

Abstract [en]

The Systemic Grammar Network notation is a non-formal knowledge representation language. We define a variant of the System Grammar Network notation and use this notation as a draft modelling language in the knowledge acquisition process of the VVEXP project. VVEXP is a prototype of a knowledge based system that predicts slipperiness on the roads. VVEXP has access to a real time database that contains recordings from more than five hundred field stations. One recording typically contains temperatures of air and road surface, wind speed and direction, dew point and precipitation. We use the METAMETH methodology, focus on the knowledge acquisition process and discuss our choice of draft modelling language. Other draft modelling languages that might be used in METAMETH are compared to Systemic Grammar Network. We conclude that Systemic Grammar Network was a good draft modelling language to represent the specific kind of domain knowledge characteristic of the VVEXP project.
