Abstract [en]

Attention deficiency hyperactive disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychiatric disability characterized by attention problems, impulsivity, and hyperactivity that can affect education, working life, social relationships, and physical and mental health. Research shows a shortened life expectancy in adults with ADHD which has to do with impaired lifestyle habits. In the field of health sciences, it is important to alleviate suffering, promote health, and prevent ill health. The purpose of this chapter is to describe factors that affect the health and lifestyle of adults with ADHD. The method is a literature search. Adults with ADHD were affected by cognitive impairments that affected life to a large extent. Lifestyle habits with a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, and drug use were more common in people with ADHD. In addition, comorbidity with both physical and mental health is common. Loneliness and deteriorating quality of life plague many people with ADHD. Combined treatment methods with psychosocial interventions are important. Health-promoting lifestyle programs where support for physical, mental, and social health is important. Conclusion: Research on lifestyle programs for adults with ADHD is lacking. There is some research that supports the idea that continuous health-promoting lifestyle programs based on interpersonal relationships, health education, and health discussions as well as cognitive support can be useful for lifestyle changes among people with ADHD.

Abstract [en]

At the Mid Sweden University (MiUN) students are expected to cite relevant and domain specific intellectual authorities when writing their papers and theses. To help students achieve this, the University Library at MiUN provides instruction. Here, a proposed approach of improving library instruction is to study the sources which students cite.

Extracting references manually is labour intensive and thus unrealistic to undertake systematically. We therefore present a method, using Open Source software (AnyStyle and R), that parses, extracts, and compiles citation data from theses stored in pdf format on an institutional repository, making it possible to perform source analysis and study co-citation patterns.

Output from researchers affiliated to the same institution and active within the same field of study as the students can act as a baseline by which comparisons can be performed. These researchers are frequently the students’ teachers, and have therefore potentially played a part in assembling their required reading lists.

With this approach we propose that library instruction can be revised and improved using methods frequently employed within research evaluation. Findings can also be forwarded to teachers and course administrators, rendering the library an active partner in course development and assessment. In addition, providing information regarding inter-disciplinary influences that impact students as well as revealing differences between research and educational output.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Today there are many ways to search for news stories and blog posts. Several free news search engines enable you to search in many news sources offering freely available content. The majority of these sources will only let you read their stories for a limited time while some others have a longer back archive on the web. There are also news databases and search services that will let you search for free but will charge for the viewing of full text. Whereas most of news search tools will only index news published on the web there are some that will let you search printed news stories as well.

The problem for the user is that he or she has to gain knowledge of several types of news search tools and what the strengths and weaknesses of these are. On top of this there is the additional problem of not having the time to use all the tools regularly to get all the updates on topics of interest. This seminar offers an overview of the most important of the presently available news search tools that are free to use. It's also about how you can use some of these services to monitor news sources for the appearance of keywords that you supply. The ability to build your own personal filters to cope with the deluge of news stories is more needed than ever.

Different categories of news sources are presented and discussed. These include newspapers, broadcast news, news agencies, press release wires and specialized sources. It's not always easy to find the best search tool to use for the various sources and sometimes you have to combine different services to expand the coverage. Blogs and social media is also a part of the news scene. Tools for searching blogs, discovery of blogs and monitoring of blogs are introduced. Comparisons between different monitoring strategies such as news alerts, news digests and RSS feeds are made. An evaluation of various feed reader environments for subscriptions to news feeds and keyword-generated search feeds is also presented.

Abstract [en]

The most popular and widely used search engines are from the United States where search engine technology originated. However, a lot of European search engines have emerged during the last ten years, the most important of these being EuroSeek and AlltheWeb. European search engines are often developed with a more limited user group in mind, such as the speakers of a certain language or a particular country. They can be a better choice if your interests have a local European focus. A good place to start is for instance combined news and blog search engines.

There are also at least two sizable web search engines in Europe with their own unique web indexes. One of these, Exalead, in fact offers more advanced search functions than any other web search engine today. In this context it is important to remember that the overlap between results from different search engines are generally overstated. The difference between relevance ranking algorithms employed by different search engines also means that the first few screens with results will vary considerably between search engines. Therefore using only one search engine is never recommendable.

Particularly interesting experiments have been made by search engine developers in France. Examples are the visual interactive maps used by the meta search engine Kartoo and the graphically innovative user interface of Ujiko. The earlier mentioned Exalead offers many ways to refine search queries and also browse results using previews of web pages with keywords marked out. Wikio is the name of a news and blog search engine with Web2.0 aspirations in which you can contribute with articles of your own, vote on articles and create personalised news pages. In Sweden there have been developments in image search technology including content-based search, facial recognition and more secure family filters. Of particular interest among other European search engine advances is the interface of Quintura from Russia. With Quinturas interactive word clouds it is easy to preview how adding new search terms would change query results, before actually applying these terms.

The European Union has contributed funding to European search engines project during the last few years. The most ambitious, the joint French-German Quaero project, unfortunately failed but two different branches have continued separately as Quaero and THESEUS. Another project is PHAROS and like Quaero it is focused on multimedia search whereas THESEUS is text-oriented and concerned with the semantic web. In 2007 The Article 29 Working Party of the European Union has been pushing the issue of protecting the search engine users privacy. They have corresponded with Google and as an outcome there have indeed been changes to the privacy policies of the four dominant US search engines.

In Europe there have also been concerns about the use of copyrighted texts in news search engines. In fact there have been several legal disputes and in some cases Google has lost like in Belgium and Norway. Additionally some prominent Europeans have feared that the popular Google Book Search would be entirely dominated by English-language literature. It is therefore satisfying to see that during the last two years some major European libraries with big collections of French, German and Spanish literature have joined the Google Book Search.
