Abstract [en]

In the field of communication studies the topic of telephony and the gendering of space via voice and emotions have received limited attention. The focus of this article is on how telephone conversations are mediated by voice and emotions, which in turn shape and gender social space. The methodology is a collaborative autoethnographic design based on diary notes and memory work. Two central themes emerge from the findings, which explain how space becomes gendered when using the telephone. The first explores the voice and relations of power and the second examines the interstices between work, caring and the telephone. Our findings reveal the central role of work and caring and how these spaces are constantly being transgressed and transformed as the mobile phone becomes an important appendage for sensory perceptions of hearing/listening/voice. We argue that these themes point toward the crucial impact of emotions in the construction of multiple and gendered spatialities of telephony.

Abstract [en]

Studies on gender and telephony tend to be quantitative and depict the purposes for which women and men use mobile telephones and landlines. Qualitative studies on the topic predominantly rely on face-to-face interviews to examine how telephone use genders space. We suggest these traditional methods of data collection leave unexamined the emotional and social relationships that emerge and are enabled by telephone use which at times reconfigure and gender social spaces. In this article we present a collaborative autoethnographic inquiry based on our own telephone lives. We introduce a reflexive visual and textual methodological design, specifically diary notes, memory work, and photography, developed from our lives as researcher and researched. We examine an important theme in our findings, the physical placement of the telephone and the phone holder’s awareness of the physicality of the telephone, which illustrates the importance of our methodological choices. We show how the placement of the phone by the users both genders space and creates emotional spaces.

Research Outline

This chapter constitute the third untimely academic novella in a trilogy of biographical narratives about a woman’s life, writing and desire to obtain a professor’s chair in the beginning of the twenty-first century, in Sweden. The diversity of forms used in creating as set of interwoven stories is inspired by poststructuralist and postcolonial feminist theory and literary fiction and by writing methodologies such as diary writing, memory work and poetic writing. The novella engages in some of the key aspects of Plummer’s ideas about a critical humanism with emphasis on the contribution from the fictional novella to explore complex relations of power. Writing water a story about resistance that shows how family, society and academia interact in the making of knowledge.

Abstract [en]

This article is part of a project, which builds on interviews with feminist scholars about the complex activity of writing research. The focus is on exploring processes of writing and genre in the context of a feminist academic author’s career and to reflect on these in relation to a context of contemporary post/academic writing strategies. The article builds on a publicly staged dialogue with Nina Lykke, Professor of Gender Studies with special reference to Gender and Culture at Linköping University, Sweden, focusing on themes such as academic authoring, ‘wild others’ and unexpected encounters. In particular the writing of Lykke’s book Cosmodolphins. Feminist Cultural Studies of Technology, Animals and the Sacred (with Mette Bryld, 2000) is acknowledged. Political passion and queerness pave way for analysing the emergence of a genre-blending creative writing methodology. The article argues that contemporary multiple and shifting interdisciplinary forms of writing methodologies are the product of complex conditions related to terrains of academic life, social relations of power, and for feminist scholars - a passion for change.

Contemporary challenges for seeking new knowledge in feminist studies are intimately intertwined with methodological renewal that promotes justice and equality in changing global contexts. Written by some of the leading scholars in their fields, this edited collection focuses on the emergence of writing methodologies in feminist studies and their implications for the study of power and change.

The book explores some of the central politics, ideas, and dimensions of power that shape and condition knowledge, at the same time as it elaborates critical, embodied, reflective and situated writing practices. By bringing together a variety of multi/transdisciplinary contributions in a single collection, the anthology offers a timely and intellectually stimulating contribution that deals with how new forms of writing research can contribute to promote fruitful analysis of inequality and power relations related to gender, racialisation, ethnicity, class and heteronormativity and their intersections. It also includes the complex relationship between author, text and audiences.

The intended audience is postgraduates, researchers and academics within feminist and intersectionality studies across disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. The book is excellent as literature in feminist studies courses and helpful guidance for teaching writing sessions and workshops.
